The Dark Knight Rises: In A Nutshell (Part I)

Made this when I had some free time because reasons.

“I have Ra’s Al Ghul things to do… FUCK YO’ SHIT!”

I’m torn between

“Wanna fight?” “Le’s go.”

And

“Gunfire is funfire!”

“It’s more than just a light… It’s a signal.  A signal to Gotham that their secret hope for justice, for a better tomorrow, isn’t just a fantasy.

Now let’s just hope the right people see it.”

As some one who is considering making the Batwoman symbol and “It’s not a warning. It’s a call to arms.” my first/only tattoo, this is very meaningful.

Batman Year One sketchbook material by David Mazzucchelli.

Batman Year One was my first Batman book, ironic not the least because Frank Miller’s introduction to my copy recounted his first experience with a Batman comic. And while I’ve outgrown Frank Miller’s writing quite a bit, David Mazzucchelli’s art in that book and comics art in similar styles have always taken me right back to that place in sixth grade when I could recite Batman Year One from memory.

trinity appreciation post #1
urgh these three slay me, they do

look at them: kicking ass, sparring while talking about their babies, becoming gods together, trolling each other at weddings, hugging at funerals, teasing each other about their civilian identities
just … their friendship is so damn beautiful
i swear i was going to write something coherent
basically i love these three and the ~polyamorous platonic life partners~ thing they have going on and i want to smush their faces together but not in a romantic sense

This is a great photoset.

This is what I want superheroes to be like. In comics and I suppose elsewhere.

I finished my cross stitch project! The text is one of my favorite quotes from the Batwoman series, and I chose masks (and logos, I guess, in the case of Oracle) from my favorite era of Batman comics. Shocking, how the major masked heroes of this era are 70% female, I know.

More notes: I’m particularly proud of how the backstitching on Oracle worked out, less so with the specular highlights on Catwoman’s goggles and the stitches around Batgirl’s mouth. They’re really subtle in the case of Catwoman and, as you may notice, nearly invisible in the case of Batgirl.

I’m also unhappy with Question’s skin color, which is far too pale*. I’ve got very little color sense (seriously you should have seen what The Mary Sue’s tumblr page looked like before I had a designer on our ad team revamp it). Standing in the fabric store staring at five different colors, this seemed like the best Hispanic skin tone to choose without risking a color that, once I actually started stitching with it, turned out to make her look like a block of wood or an alien with a spray tan. At least she’s more yellow than pink.

Anyway, if I ever made another one of these I’d want to fix these issues, probably by using a much lighter grey on Batgirl’s stitching, though I’m not really sure how to fix the thread color of the Question’s skin. I don’t trust color charts online, because color calibration between monitors. In the meantime I’ve got the design all done up in KG-Chart and wouldn’t mind sharing it if anyone was interested. Very, VERY idly toying with the additional idea of making these for money. I love cross stitching and this one went very quickly. Can’t decide yet whether I want to perfect all my nitpicks with this one, or move on and do one for The (fan) Outsiders.

*If you’re about to say something like “But some Hispanic people have very fair skin” STOP RIGHT NOW because I hear this statement all the time when I mention whitewashing of Hispanic characters and it makes my blood boil. Why? Because the people saying it to me usually have no idea that they are saying it to a Hispanic person. Why? Because I am fair skinned. (And I suppose, on the Internet, I also have a surname that does not immediately strike most people as being Hispanic, despite the fact that it, like, totally is. Sorry my last name isn’t Gonzales, or something, I guess. Now if only people didn’t keep trying to shove z’s, double n’s, or h’s into my first name.) Both Renee’s parents are Dominican immigrants, whereas I am only half Puerto Rican. She’s gonna have darker skin than me, and furthermore, is usually depicted that way, so I’d rather my thread color got closer to that.

It’s not that I didn’t read comics before Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel. I did. But I never once considered going into the comic book store and making a pull list/subscribing/preordering/etc. I just read stuff online, read trade paperbacks, checked stuff…

Kingdom Come #1!

Found it last night during the neverending project that has been organizing all my pre-New-52 comics. I’m going to have to buy a ninth box.

THAT’S WHY YOU’RE PERFECT, DAMMIT

YOU THINK PRINCESSES AREN’T RICH?

YOU THINK A FAMILY THAT CAN NEVER DIE IS bad?

SHUT YOUR BATHOLE.

I never used to ‘ship Batman with anyone because to my younger self it felt like imagining your parents having sex. If I had to pick somebody these days it would probably be Catwoman, but this is all a very round about way of getting to the fact that I would totally shout “SHUT YOUR BATHOLE” at Batman if I knew him.
